It is with great regret and sadness that the post learned of the passing of Roger Morrissey on December 30, 2024. Roger was a pillar of VFW Hawthorne Post 2075 who served as Commander for 6 of the 35 years he was a member of the post.
Born as the oldest boy in a family of 11, from Winterset, Iowa, Roger grew up on a farm with his siblings. Ten years later, the family moved to Southern California where Roger finished grade school and high school. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and completed three tours in Vietnam. He finished his Army career after 9 ½ years. He then went on to work in Aerospace his entire business career and completed his master’s degree while working.
After retirement, he actively served and contributed to many other civic and patriotic organizations:
· Member of the Vietnam Veteran
Association, Chapter 53
· Member of Knights of Columbus
· Member of the American legion, Post
314
· Member of Blinded Veterans Association
As an elder statesman of the Post,
Roger was a key figure in the annual Thanksgiving celebration for veterans and
for securing funding to keep the Post’s operations and programs running. He
will be dearly missed as members at the post looked to him for his wise
counsel, many years of experience and great stories.
Roger was a Hawthorne resident for 37
years and is survived by his wife Julie along with four children, 14
grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
